This is not a simple matter. For the sake of discussion we can say that we have a conscious thinking mind. And we can say that we have an unconscious non-thinking mind. And we can further say that these two minds are not always working in harmony. That is why we think we are going to do one thing and then actually do another. We have great intentions to clean out the garage, loose some weight, write that book or be more patient with our families. Yet no matter how much we desire to accomplish these goals, we fail miserably, time and time again.
Why is it that we cannot do what we decide we want to do? What happens to cause us to fail? One possible explanation is that we are holding two opposing beliefs that are canceling each other out. We decide with our conscious thinking mind that we are going to do whatever it takes to loose that weight. But our unconscious belief is that loosing the weight has an undesirable outcome. We might unconsciously believe that we will be unhappy giving up our comfort foods and that the pay off of being our ideal weight is not worth the sacrifice. Our conscious mind focuses on the positives of loosing the weight while our unconscious mind believes that we will be too unhappy with the new food choices that we will have to make to succeed. So the belief in the unconscious mind stops the conscious mind from succeeding.
Another complication is that we seldom know what the hidden belief is that is holding us back. We can however learn how to gain access to the hidden beliefs that are controlling our lives, and change them. We cannot alter a belief if we are unaware that it is present inside of us. Hidden from our conscious thinking mind.
Dreams are a way to understand what is stored in the unconscious mind. Yet dreams are mysterious and difficult to make sense out of. The key is that the dream does not have to make sense to be valuable in the quest toward self-awareness. Pictures are the language of the unconscious mind. Therefore the unconscious mind has only pictures with which to communicate its beliefs and ideas. And the unconscious non-thinking mind doesn't use logic when processing information. It simply relays what is present and makes no judgments about it.
If you have ever played pictionary you will have an idea of how this works. If you dream about a friend, the dream is not likely to be about them at all, but more likely to be telling you something about yourself that is like that other person in the dream. The friend is a symbol for some part of you that needs your attention. So when you dream about someone, you might ask yourself, what do I think of this person. The first thought that comes to your mind is usually the most accurate. Then look to see if you find that quality in yourself. Most often you will be in denial about it and not want to face whatever it is that is also in yourself.
Many of the beliefs that are steadfastly operating our actions were placed there by people we don't agree with today. At an early age we began to copy the behaviors of those people who we considered significant, such as parents, older sibling, teachers, and friends. So today we are taking many of our cues from the child mind which is still within us telling us what is right and what is not right.
The most empowering work we can ever do is to learn to read the information bubbling up from the unconscious mind as it presents itself through our dreams, body signals, hunches, intuition and day dreams.
